This includes state-of-the-art observations as a community service but also excellent opportunities to work directly at ESO at all career stages. I will give a quick overview of ESO`s observing facilities and show how to access them including advice on proposal writing. In the final part, the ESO fellow and studentship programmes hosted in Germany and Chile will be presented. This presentation is planned to be very informal and interactive so that we can concentrate on the main interests of the audience.

PRVO PREDAVANjE

Predavač: dr Marijana Petrović, associate professor, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering

Naslov predavanja: AN ELECTRE-BASED DECISION AID TOOL FOR STEPWISE BENCHMARKING

Apstrakt: Benchmarking is a management tool defined as a systematic process of measuring products, services or business practices against those recognized as business leaders. One way to adjust benchmarking to address successive performance improvements is found in the literature under the term stepwise benchmarking. The logic of stepwise approach is that a benchmarking unit should follow a sequence of relevant benchmarks along its improvement path toward target performance. An innovative approach for operationalization of stepwise benchmarking is using a specific ELECTRE-based procedure, labeled as ELECTRE Multi-Level Outranking. This outranking approach is used to establish the hierarchical position of benchmarking units. A specific procedure enables to select preferable development paths that consist of a sequence of intermediate benchmarks. The proposed method can help decision makers to 1) detect disparities among benchmarking units and 2) identify intermediate benchmarks for less successful ones in each stage of their progress toward the ultimate benchmark target.

DRUGO PREDAVANjE

Predavač: dr Nataša Bojković, associate professor, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering

Naslov predavanja: SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL IN ELECTRE-BASED STEPWISE BENCHMARKING MODEL

Apstrakt: ELECTRE-based stepwise benchmarking model can be improved with data pre-processing procedure based on the decision maker`s judgments about the performance levels. For this purpose, a new model translates the sequence of descriptive, non-numerical decision maker`s assertions into scoring parameters. The proposed preference elicitation procedure enables to accommodate decision maker`s perception on performance of benchmarking units. Thereby distinct performance characteristics are acknowledged and practical feasibility of benchmarking paths is enhanced. The important feature of the proposed procedure is that it allows proceeding with more scoring options, which can occur with some performance indicators.

6th Heidelberg Laureate Forum, 23-28. September, 2018.

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) annually organizes the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which is a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from all over the world. The 6th Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from September 23 to 28, 2018. The HLFF was established and is funded by the German foundation the Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science. The Scientific Partners of the HLFF are the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) and Heidelberg University. The HLF is strongly supported by the award-granting institutions, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA).

Young researchers in computer science and mathematics from all over the world can apply for one of the 200 coveted spots to participate in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), an annual networking event. The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the great opportunity to personally interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. For one week, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize for Computing, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany.

The 6th HLF will take place from September 23 to 28, 2018 (with young researcher registration on September 22). This prominent, versatile event combines scientific, social and outreach activities in a unique atmosphere, fueled by comprehensive exchange and scientific inspiration. Laureate lectures, young researcher workshops and a structure welcoming unfettered discussions are the elements that compose the Forum’s platform.

Over the course of the week-long HLF, young researchers will be given the exclusive possibility to profoundly connect with their scientific role models and find out how the laureates made it to the top of their fields.

The application period for the 6th HLF runs from November 6, 2017 until February 9, 2018. Young researchers at all phases of their careers (undergraduate, graduate PhD or postdoc) are encouraged to complete and submit their applications by February 9 (midnight at the dateline) via the following link: http://application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

All applications that are completed and submitted by the deadline are meticulously reviewed by an international committee of experts to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are invited. There are 100 spaces available for each discipline of mathematics and computer science. All applicants will be notified by the end of April 2018 whether or not they will be invited.

For questions regarding requirements and the application process, please contact Young Researchers Relations at yr@heidelberg-laureate-forum.org
