Global position of University of Belgrade on the world university ranking lists and its positions in the subject “Mathematics”

In the last several years, University of Belgrade (UB) is highly positioned on several ranking lists that compare universities all around the word based on different ranking criteria. Besides global university academic performance ranking, most of the lists also provide ranking by subject area. University of Belgrade is highly ranked in the subject “Mathematics” on prestigious world ranking lists. Having in mind that these lists use different ranking criteria, high position of UB in several ranking lists in subject “Mathematics” indicate high quality of both education and research at the Faculty of Mathematics, which is comparable with famous and recognized world universities. Although the Faculty of Mathematics works under inadequate conditions, three main priorities of the Faculty remain the quality of studies, research, and the work with young researchers. Table 1 gives a comparative overview of global ranking of University of Belgrade on well-known lists and its positions in the subject “Mathematics” in the last several years.

Shanghai list (Academic Ranking of World Universities -ARWU list) is created by CWCU center and Graduate School Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. Taiwan list (NTU ranking list) is created by National Taiwan University NTU. It contains overall, 6 field, and 14 subject rankings of world universities based on the performance of scientific papers. This ranking system evaluates the performance of scientific papers, and the indicators are designed to compare both the quality and the quantity of scientific papers in each university by examining long-term performance and short-term research efforts. US News list is based on 12 indicators that measure academic research performance of universities and their global and regional reputations. Universities from U.S. and around 60 other countries have been ranked in US News list containing world's top 1000 universities. Students can use these rankings to explore the higher education options that exist beyond their own countries' borders and to compare key aspects of schools' research missions. URAP list (University Ranking by academic performance list) is created by non-profit organization URAP at Research Laboratory of Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University. Main objective of URAP is to develop a ranking system for the world universities based on academic performances which determined by quality and quantity of scholarly publications.
